Green Energy
Climate change. We see it everywhere we go. When we switch on the news, journalists are reporting on fossil fuels and global greenhouse gas emissions. When we drive, we are hit with 'clean air zones'.
Climate change is important, which is why it's such a popular topic. We all have a duty to protect the planet we live on, both for ourselves and for future generations.
This is why renewable energy is vital. It allows us to continue generating the energy we so desperately need as a society, but without harming the planet. Here is everything you need to know about green energy and how we can generate green energy from waste.
Renewable Energy Directive EU
The Renewable Energy Directive is a legal framework set for the European Union that dictates the level of renewable energy used. It was decided on by members of the EU with the goal of cutting down greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the use of clean energy and renewable energy to lessen the impact each country has on the environment.
The Renewable Energy Directive requires 20% of the energy used by the EU to be renewable. It also aims to lower the EU's carbon emissions by 20% and achieve energy savings of 20%. It is continuously being updated and was changed again in 2018 so the EU has a new goal of using a minimum of 32% renewable energy by 2030.

Green Energy Explained
Green energy is a type of sustainable energy that comes from natural sources. This can be solar power, which is energy that is taken from the sun. It can also be wind power. An example of wind power is wind turbines, which use wind power to produce energy or electricity. Alongside solar power and wind power, there is also hydropower, which is energy collected from moving water.
Green energy is different to clean energy and renewable energy. Clean energy is a source of energy that does not release pollutants. Renewable energy is energy that can be replenished, like solar power, wind power, and hydropower. Heat pumps and wind turbines are two examples of machinery that collect renewable energy.
How do You Get Green Energy From Waste?
Generating sustainable energy from waste isn't easy. This is because the process of using waste to create energy often involves burning items. If we're not careful, then the gas emissions released from burning waste can contain carbon dioxide, harming the environment in the process. Flue gas treatment is used to remove pollutants and meet pollution limits.
However, if waste is being burned that is deprived of fossil fuels (plastic, for example), then this is much safer for the environment as it stops this waste from going to a landfill site or being discarded somewhere where it can harm wildlife.
